Description
The
Amaryllis Hippeastrum species originated from the sub-tropical areas of
South America. A flowering size bulb has up to two stems producing four
spectacular, large, colourful trumpets each. They can be grown in
containers or directly in the garden. Hippeastrum will remain evergreen
year round in sub-tropical and temperate climates where frosts are not
experienced, however the bulbs will become fully dormant over the
cooler and wetter winter months in colder areas. They are not difficult
to grow and produce lovely cut flowers provided the following simple
basic points are noted.
Cultivation
Hippeastrum
will grow best in a sunny and windless location. Plant them near a wall
or fence to provide some protection. Plant Hippeastrums in a free
draining soil with a neutral pH and add a liberal dose of well rotted
compost or low nitrogen manure. Ensure you leave the neck of the bulb
protruding above the soil. Plant the bulbs from August to November,
making sure to have the roots hanging freely down into the mixture.
Water
after planting and then restrict the watering until after the growing
buds start appearing. During growth and flowering, give a once weekly
deep soaking. Always water around the bulbs and never directly
overhead, as this can cause the bulb to rot from within.
Provide
protection from snails, slugs and mealy bugs which can invade the bulbs
and foliage. Also guard against red spider mites and thrips which can
ruin the flowers. If grown in the garden in warmer winter areas, they
can be left undisturbed for many years.
If grown in containers, they
can be simply protected from winter rains or tipped on to their
sides. In cool and wet winter garden areas, they should either be given
protection or lifted in April – May and stored over the
winter months. Cut the foliage close down to the neck of the bulb and
store the bulbs in a cool place at approximately 10 to 12 degrees
Celsius and replant again in August - September.
