New Zealand Flax

The New Zealand Flax is quite distinctive from the true Flax (Linum usitatissimum) found in the Northern Hemisphere. The common name “Flax” was coined by the Europeans because, like true Flax, it was used for its fibres.

New Zealand Flax are stunning, evergreen clumping plants grown for their striking sword shaped leaves and architectural appearance. Their low water requirements and tough foliage suit them ideally to coastal and low maintenance gardens, as well as for container growing. A bright sunny position will enhance the foliage colour which can then also be used in flower arrangements.
