Description

Lilacs are popular showy plants favoured for their colour, fragrance and versatility as either garden specimens or planted as informal hedges. A deciduous shrub growing to approximately 6 metres tall with arching panicles of small, highly fragrant flowers massed in loose pyramidal heads in mid spring to early summer. The dense foliage has mid to dark green leaves which are heart shaped and grow up to 10cm long. A fully frost hardy and easy to maintain plant that is adaptable to most soil types in most gardens.

Cultivation

Lilacs prefer moist, compost rich, well drained soil in full sun or light shade. They grow best where winters are cold and will flower best if subjected to a few good frosts. Simple and easy to grow, Lilacs only require pruning to personal tastes and this is best done immediately after flowering.
