Hymenocallis x festalis - Spider Flower |
Family: Amaryllidaceae Common Name(s): Spider Flower Native to: Tropical & Subtropical America Flowering: Summer Watering: Water occasionally, keeping soil moist Planting Aspect: Full Sun, Part Shade DescriptionHymenocallis produces unusual, strikingly beautiful white, frilly edged trumpets with narrow, spider-like, reflexed petals and is deliciously scented in summer. It is a marginally frost hardy deciduous bulb with glossy green, slender strap-like leaves and flower stems which bear up to 5, 10cm wide blooms to a height of 45cm. They are plants of tropical origins; however they will grow quite successfully in temperate to cool climatic regions as well in either the garden or container.CultivationSelect a site that is frost free in either a sunny or part shady location. Plant the bulbs about 15cm deep in a moist, free draining, organic rich soil. Prepare the growing site by digging over the soil and adding a good handful of blood and bone or rich compost prior to planting out. Water in well at planting time and ensure that the soil is kept moist throughout the growing season but kept dry over the winter period when they are dormant. No particular pests or diseases but protect them from snails and slugs. |
