Description

An evergreen, medium sized Australian native tree with shiny, leathery leaves and masses of dainty pink flowers like fringed ballerina dresses which hang in clusters below the stems in spring and summer. The flowers are followed by blue berries in autumn. Ideal slender, specimen tree for warmer regions. In the garden it can be grown for hedging or as a stately small tree to a height of around 9 metres. It can also be planted in a container and pruned to form a 3metre shrub.

Cultivation

Thrives in moist but well drained soil in a sunny to part shade position. It requires some protection from frost when young. Will tolerate many soil locations from sandy to clay. Plants grown in containers will require a plentiful supply of water during the growing season. Prepare the growing site by digging over the soil and adding a good handful of blood and bone, rich compost or well decayed animal manure prior to planting out. Feed with complete fertiliser in spring and autumn.
