Family: Amaryllidaceae Common Name(s): Fairy Lily Native to: South America Flowering: Summer Watering: Keep the soil moist during Summer Planting Aspect: Full sun to part shade DescriptionA bright and sweetly scented summer flowering bulb for the front of garden borders, rockeries and container growing in a sunny, frost free location. Long necked almost sessile, lemon-yellow trumpets with a delightful lemon scent. The flowers grow from a central umbel on a stem 25cm tall in summer when the daffodil like leaves appear. It also makes an excellent cut flower.CultivationChlidanthus are only marginally frost hardy and therefore should be grown in a frost free, full sun or lightly shaded location. Plant the bulbs 5cm deep and 10cm apart in spring in an organically rich, well drained, sandy soil that is continuously moist. An annual side dressing of potassium sulphate when in full leaf after flowering will promote next year’s flowering. Reduce watering when the leaves die back in autumn and either lift and dry store the bulbs over winter or protect from rain. If grown in containers, repot each spring in fresh mix made up of equal parts good top soil, peat moss and sand. Protect Chlidanthus from snails and slugs. |
