Bearded Iris - "Planned Treasure" |
Family: Iridaceae Common Name(s): Bearded Iris, Flag Iris Native to: Central and southern Europe Flowering: late October through to late November Watering: Water when growth appears and keep soil moist until foliage dies off after flowering. Planting Aspect: Full Sun, Part Shade DescriptionBearded Iris, also known as Flag Iris are available in a range of sizes varying from Dwarfs that only grow to about 50cm high through Intermediate and Tall types that reach up to 2metres. Flowering in spring to early summer, they produce 1 to 2 large, elegant blooms with ruffled petals on the sparsely branching stems from the main trunk. The flowering stems and lush tropical sword shaped leaves are produced from a creeping rhizome that multiplies rapidly into large clumps. They are a hardy backdrop to all garden locations and can also be potted and brought indoors. Bearded Iris is very frost hardy and easy to grow in a sunny location in just about any temperate to cool climate area. |
CultivationChoose a sunny location and a free draining but moist soil which is organically enriched. Prepare the growing site by digging over the soil and adding a good handful of blood and bone, rich compost or well decayed animal manure prior to planting out. Place the rhizomes 25 to 30 cm apart and cover them with soil but leaving the growing point exposed above soil level. Ensure that there is a reasonably clear area around the plant for the growing clump to spread out. Do not cover the area with mulch. No additional fertilizer is needed in the first year if the soil is organically rich. The plants will respond well to regular applications of liquid fertiliser and watering throughout the 2nd growing season and thereafter. Protect them from aphids, thrips, snails and slugs. |
