Description

A rhizomatous, evergreen perennial forming a dense foliage clump up to 1.5 metres high with a spread up to 1.8 metres. Silver Spear is a striking plant with bright, almost metallic silvery leaves and inconspicuous flowers followed by showy clusters of brightly coloured berries. It is an easily grown plant suitable for striking colour and contrasting shape in all gardens with part shade and moisture.


Cultivation

Astelia will grow best in moist, peaty, well drained soil in full sun or part shade and will tolerate light frosts. Prepare the growing site by digging over the soil and adding a good handful of blood and bone, rich compost or well decayed animal manure prior to planting out. Water in well at planting time and then on an occasional basis to promote growth. No particular pests or diseases.
