Description

The Chaste tree is a deciduous, rounded shrub or small tree growing from 3 to 6 metres tall with an upright, branching, woody stem. It is a moderately frost hardy shrub full of large aromatic deep-green leaves which are felty grey underneath. In summer/autumn it bears dense, erect sprays of faintly perfumed, lavender flowers up to 30cm long which are followed by small purple fruit.

Cultivation

Vitex is a moderate to marginally frost hardy plant that will adapt to most soils and dry growing environments when established. It will of course grow best if planted in a fertile soil which has good drainage and plenty of moisture in the summer. Choose a sheltered location in full sun. Large established bushes can be pruned back hard each year to maintain the plants shape, size and flowering quality. It will respond well to fertiliser and water during the growing season. No known pests or diseases.
