Description

Helleborus are evergreen clump forming perennials with glossy green segmented leaves and beautiful, open flowers in many shades of white, green, red, purple and pink. Growing to a height and width of only 60cm, they are colourfully effective planted in drifts or massed in the shade of deciduous trees and shrubs. They flower from winter through spring and are suitable for cooler Australian climatic regions except areas of high humidity.

Cultivation

Choose a site that is part shady in summer and has soil that is moist, well draining and organically rich. Prepare the growing site by digging over the soil and adding a good handful of blood and bone or rich compost prior to planting out. Plants will respond well to regular applications of liquid fertiliser and watering throughout the growing season. Ensure that the soil is kept moist at all times as this will ensure flowering success. Protect them from aphids.
