Description

Sometimes commonly known as Naked Ladies, Belladonnas produce the most magnificent display of long stemmed umbels (up to 75cm tall) of bright rose-pink flowers from leafless bulbs in late summer/early autumn. Some months later after this long lasting and fragrant show of colour is over and the flowers have withered; the bright green, rather succulent leaves appear. An extremely tough flowering bulb that is both frost and drought resistant once established. Plant them among low growing shrubs in dry conditions for a contrasting colour splash and ideal as cut flowers. Belladonna is easy to grow and suitable for most climates.

Cultivation

Choose a full sunny position in most climatic areas; except in hot, arid regions where they appreciate some shade. A moist, free draining soil is preferred with the only additional moisture required in autumn and spring. Prepare the growing site by digging over the soil and adding a good handful of blood and bone or rich compost prior to planting out. Plant the bulbs with the neck protruding at soil level or up to 10cm deep where winters fall below freezing for long periods. Water in well at planting time and then on an occasional basis to promote growth. No particular pests or diseases.
